I think it's great to be able to offer another option for customers that gives them the opportunity to get out from underneath the thumbs that exist.

I would agree that it is Great that alternatives are now more available to people. However it saddens me that people would rather be oppressed by Microsoft and other evil company's because the are unwilling to try something new, or unpopular. It drives me crazy! programs won't become popular unless people use them! I will never understand peoples sheepish attitudes!

I'm not sure I agree with the sheepish attitudes. I use the Mocrisoft stuff because I know I've got a pool of talent I can tap to help me through problems I have, where as if I were using Ubuntu, it would be harder to find that pool of knowledge in the friends I have.

I'm certain that will alll change as time goes by, but comfortable is comfortable, yknow? While many can rifle off the vile barbs of being anti-microsoft, I just know that, in general, I haven't had all that big a problem with the last several installs of XP etc.

If we're paying, and aren't having problems, that doesn't mean that I'm/the millions of others are being "sheepish" - it means that they have something that works. I also agree that if those people knew that there was something "better" that didn't cost as much but let them do the things they needed to, they would at least try it out.

Maybe uninformed/ignorant of alternatives, rather than sheepish/sheeple. :)

Ok I can see your point. Pools of knowledge are nice to have around, but .. There is tons of knowledge on the Internet for both Linux and windows, I have found that in most cases that the people I have for help when it comes to Linux of windows are not of much use. I can find everything I need on the Internet almost all of the time. You just have to be willing to look.

Yes Plenty of people out there are not inconvenienced by activating their windows XP or any other product that has activation, most don't even see activation as a potential problem. I ask you what happens when it becomes a problem? What happens when the activation servers shut off? What will you do then? By then its too late to explore other options. People should be preparing themselves for the inevitable. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Personally I hope the activation servers never get turned off, but lets face it, its going to happen eventually, It wouldn't make sense for them to activate the product for ever the cost alone would be to much. Microsoft is about making money just like any company - product activation servers shutting off = no more reinstalls = more money when people are forced into buying the new windows. Its all about the money. You might say that people just won't buy the new windows – I would be willing to bet that most (95%) will suck it up and buy the new windows because they were not prepared for this or unwilling to try alternatives and its just easier to spend the money and buy the new product. These people are the sheep! The other percent will try something new like Linux , some may like it some may not. I'm not saying that Microsoft is evil it may come off as that but lets face it they are NOT out for the consumers best interest.

I use Microsoft as an example they are not the only ones that are guilty of this. Plenty of software uses product activation I use Microsoft because everyone can relate, everyone knows what windows is NOT because I am rifling off the vile barbs of being anti-Microsoft.

Personally I use windows at home for gaming – thats it. I use Linux for everything else. I can understand that Linux is not a solution for all, but the vast majority of people could get along just fine with something like ubuntu.
