So my printer decides to print blank paper when I give it a print job from open office. Is this a common thing? I have an LazerJet 6p.

No... I checked the Ubuntu printer database, and the Laserjet 6p is specifically listed, so it should work just fine. Are you able to print a test page via the printer administration tool (system->administration->printing)?
